Course Information

Introduction

This course covers the design and strengthening of reinforced concrete structures, such as beams, columns, slabs, walls, and foundations.
It introduces the reinforced concrete behaviour, including flexure, shear, bond, anchorage, and serviceability.
It also presents the methods and criteria for the design of reinforced concrete members according to the ACI code.
The course also discusses the techniques and materials for strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures, such as external bonding, near-surface mounted reinforcement, and prestressed tendons.
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to design safe, efficient, and durable reinforced concrete structures.

Objectives

The course objectives are to provide attendees with the knowledge and skills to:
• Apply the principles of mechanics and materials to analyse the behaviour of reinforced concrete members under different loading conditions.
• Design reinforced concrete members for flexure, shear, torsion, axial force, and combined actions, according to the ACI code and other relevant standards.
• Evaluate the capacity and ductility of existing reinforced concrete structures and identify the common modes of failure and deterioration.
• Select and apply appropriate methods and techniques for strengthening and retrofitting reinforced concrete structures, such as external bonding, near-surface mounting, jacketing, and prestressing.
• Use software tools and experimental methods to model, simulate, test, and evaluate the performance of reinforced concrete structures.
